Parental Paranoia

Parenthood is a state of perpetual paranoia.

In a couple of hours, Sophie and I will go to the clinic to get a vaccination for her. She will follow the Italian vaccination schedule, which is less intense than the French one.

A quick search on the internet in the intervening hours is making me nervous about this. It's controversial, and the undelying message seems to be...

Trust no one!!

whatever. I go by the book (i.e. what's required under law) plus some risk contemplation (what's optional but highly advisable to have). For her latest jab whch is the MMR, I opted to just have the M (measles) and skip the MR (mumps and rubella) till later. There's chikcne pox going around too so that's another optional vaccine, but we've giving that a miss too.

The french schedule may seems more intense but a lot of it are not compulsory.

Laetitia is only getting her first HepB jab next week. And we'll wait for probably 2 months (a month after the second Hep B shot)before giving her the MMR.

Anyways, a lot of vaccinations has controversy around them. HepB was discontinued for a while in France once due to some studies that suggested the vaccine could cause immune system and neurological disorders. Well, I guess we have to make the best informed decision weighing the risk and benefits and of course the various different studies with arguments on both side. Ah... the joy and fears of being a parent....
